CD reviews: The Melvins

Some bands try to be cool and never make it, while others work damn hard and "sort of'' get there.

Others just are.

The Melvins is most definitely the latter, and for its 24th album, it has twisted the dial firmly towards the low frequencies, with not one but six bass players featured.

As one might expect from this enigmatic power "trio'', the album is loaded with experimental wig-outs, glorious great slabs of stoner rock and some furiously funny lyrics.

King Buzzo snarls and croons in equal measure over an almighty wave of rumbling low end, as The Melvins conjure up a litany of groove-laden tracks that evoke obvious influences yet never sound derivative.
