CD reviews: Methyl Ethel

Clearly, there's something in Perth's water supply, as the city has given rise to its fair share of musical mavericks over the years - The Sleepy Jackson/Empire of the Sun, Tame Impala - and now Methyl Ethel, a trio tethered to a woozy blend of psychedelic soundscapes and melancholy soul.

Their stall is set out from opener Idee Fixe, in which layered slabs of dense synths and guitar whirl around band leader Jake Webb's futuristic blue-eyed soul delivery, and the kaleidoscopic pop odyssey continues through the fuzzy chug of Also Gesellschaft and Twilight Driving's gliding groove.

Methyl Ethel. Oh Inhuman Spectacle. 4AD.

Three and a half stars (out of five)
