CD reviews: Metronomy

Whether channelling the best of Motown or crafting an entire album out of underwhelming small-town nightlife, there’s little doubting Joseph Mount’s singular presence in the pop world.

So it continues with his fifth album, where Mount and a stellar supporting cast (including Swedish pop pixie Robyn and DJ Mixmaster Mike) look back to the band’s halcyon days of 2008.

Yet this is far from a scattershot rehash.

There’s a charming idiosyncrasy to Summer 2008’s wonky pop whimsy, whether on Old Skool’s vintage synth throb and breathy falsetto, or the pitch-perfect blue-eyed soul of Love’s Not an Obstacle.

 Metronomy. Summer 08. Because Music.
Four stars (out of five)
