CD Reviews: Nadia Reid

Dunedin singer-songwriter Nadia Reid has pulled off that most difficult of tricks: following up an excellent debut album (Listen to Formation, Look for the Signs) with a sophomore effort that is even better.

Joined by long-time musical companions Sam Taylor (guitar), Joe McCallum (drums) and Richie Pickard (bass), Reid also worked closely with Lyttelton producer Ben Edwards. The result is a powerful yet fragile collection of songs that pulse and crackle as Reid, coaxed to play electric guitar for some songs, gives a masterclass in taut, restrained energy.

From the ebb and swirl of an effected guitar on title track Preservation, to the clank and shimmer of Richard and the propulsive  Arrow & the Aim, Reid strides confidently forward.
