CD Reviews: Paul McCartney

If one was to judge this 34-track homage to one of pop's best songwriters merely on the quality of the compositions then, well, it's a no-brainer.

However, the real test is whether any of the artists involved have added anything to the original.

Occasionally, that does happen (Toots Hibbert and reggae rhythm heavy-hitters Sly and Robbie team up on Come And Get It) but, overall, those involved seem shackled by a reverence to the source material, an outcome not helped by the fact McCartney's long-time band backed the vocalists, lending it a karaoke feel.

•  The Art of McCartney: the songs of Paul McCartney sung by the world's greatest artists. Bulletproof.
