CD reviews: Sheryl Crow

Having roamed down country roads and imbibed the steamy soul of Memphis, American singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow has opted for a blend of big pop songs and minimalist, groove-infused electric guitar-driven tunes on her 10th album.

A reunion with producer Jeff Trott seems to have helped provide Be Myself with confidence and cohesion, aided by engineer du jour Tchad Blake (back for the first time since 1998 effort The Globe Sessions).

Though the songwriting is polished, there is also no shortage of the torn and frayed (a spare guitar line elevates Roller Skate), the intimate (the downbeat Love Will Save The Day) and the quirky lyrical observations that helped bring Crow to attention in the mid-’90s.
