CD reviews: Weezer

Weezer's grip on the heart-on-sleeve power-pop crown seemed tenuous in the early part of this decade due to dalliances with Flat-Earth rappers and oppressive EDM flourishes.

Cue its fourth self-titled effort, which picks up where the triumphant Everything Will Be Alright In the End (2014) left off; the jaunty metal riffs of Thank God for Girls and Endless Bummer's sun-kissed harmonies are near impossible to resist.

In spite of some schmaltz, and Rivers Cuomo's protracted adolescence (he's 45!), this is a refreshing return to the quartet's beguiling brand of geek mythology.
