Runner was a Blessing

There was a runner in the women's 100m final who exemplified everything that is good about the Olympics.

Her first name was Blessing, and she had a most terrific hair-do.

All the finalists looked smart, with some very nice jewellery in evidence, some very well-painted nails and lovely make-up.

But Blessing stood out.

She did her best, but Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (with two hyphens) won the gold medal, while compatriot Veronica Campbell-Brown (one hyphen) took bronze.

British athlete Katerana Johnson-Thompson also had a double-barrelled name, which also required a hyphen.

Where was I?

The 2012 Olympics have been splendid.

The level of personal presentation must surely outdo any other world sporting event so far.

And once that captures the attention, you're hooked.

You are led by the eyeballs to the outstanding mini Minis that have made javelin and discus competitions so entertaining this year.

The model Minis are an 80cm long, radio-controlled version of the real Mini.

Their role is to fetch javelins, discuses, shot and hammers thrown by the athletes, and return them.

They are fabulous, whizzing, as they do, around the athletics stadium.

The mini Minis made the 10,000m final for me just by being parked in a little line by the track.

Every time the runners passed them, I cheered, as I loved them so much.

But as surely as they began, the Olympics must end, and the pointless emptiness of life will again begin to become apparent.

It may be fare for the very young, but Bedlam could step in and distract you from the reality of the human condition.

Either that or scare you out of your wits.

The series starts on UKTV on August 21, and follows the goings-on at Bedlam Heights, a fancy apartment building opened on the site of a former pre-Victorian asylum.

It uses, clearly, the nickname of the more than 750-year-old Bethlem Royal Hospital in London, which boasts a notorious past of inhumane treatment.

Bedlam (the series) features young, attractive actors who spend their time in the clearly haunted apartments indulging in the sort of physical jiggery-pokery young people appear to love so much.

Expect nudity.

But evil, black-eyed ghosts inhabit the building, popping up in ways destined to end the lives of our new chums. Only a handsome stranger in a hoodie stands between them and anasty end, including being sucked down into a very deep bath for a thorough drowning.

A horror series that is good for a fright.
