Standing ovation leaves little in doubt

The opening night audience for the Taieri Musical Society's production of Schonberg's Les Miserables became completely absorbed in the tragic tale of passion and desperation, and their standing ovation left no doubt as to the success of the show.

The programme listed 14 principals and 22 chorus members, but they were all principals really. With a talented chorus, all strong in both acting and vocal ability, onstage for most of the time, musical director Bridget Telfer and director/choreographer Douglas Kamo have created a convincing emotional show.

Costuming (Margaret Flockton) was ideally matched to the conditions and classes of the era. Sets and lighting created a sense of depth, with a revolve enabling seamless scene changes (Helen Horsnell, Karl Horsnell, Peter King, John Collier and team). The three keyboard instruments in the 14-piece orchestra were scored to give the impression of a much larger symphony orchestra, although at times I (and others) found the volume overwhelmed the voices.

Master of the House, anthems At the Barricade and Do You Hear the People Sing? were magnificent. Victor Hugo's famed literary classic (1862) contains conflicts and subplots spanning two decades in times of political unrest, as the lives and interactions of several characters focus on the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean. Peter Storer filled his Valjean role with love and benevolence, contrasting with the cruel and revengeful Javert, portrayed by an equally experienced John Kiernan-Sear.

Dynamic character roles in delightful extremes of costume and makeup from Dave Solomon and Denise Henderson as the Thenardiers created touches of humour here and there. Calla Knudson-Hollebon, so vocally strong and secure at age 16, played Cosette, with Finley Brentwood her Marius, who sang the agonising tribute to those who died on the barricades, Empty Chairs and Empty Tables.

Kelvin Cummings (Enjoralus) was outstanding in leading the doomed student rebels, Kristy Key achieved great sincerity in her role as Fantine in I Dreamed a Dream, and On My Own from Kylie Price, as Eponine, was superbly delivered. The role of Gavroche is shared by Tama Anthony-Whigham (what a brilliant acting and vocally talented 9-year-old) and Jake Remon. Little Cossette and Little Eponine are shared by Lily Hornell, Nicole Samuel and Zara Anthony-Whigham. The season continues till June 29.
