A Victorian facing a heartbreaking wait to find out whether remains discovered in outback NSW are his son's says he's made enough guesses for a lifetime.
The disappearance of Daniel Rosewall in early 2010 is one of the nation's most mysterious missing person cases.
Police believe skeletal remains found in a paddock at Wilangee cattle station, about 70km northwest of Broken Hill, on Sunday afternoon may be Daniel's.
They were being flown to Sydney today for forensic analysis and DNA testing, although it's not clear when the results will be known.
"We're expecting some calls back this afternoon just for a bit of a update, to let us know where we're up to with it," Daniel's father, David Rosewall, told AAP.
"Until we know for sure there's no point guessing.
"We've made enough guesses for a lifetime."
The 28-year-old left his hometown of Bendigo, country Victoria, on January 27, 2010, stopping quickly at his girlfriend's house before driving north in a Mazda borrowed from his mother.
The car was found abandoned on the morning of January 29 near Eldee Station, northwest of Broken Hill, west NSW.
That site is south of where the remains were found on Sunday.
The car's ignition was on, the battery flat, the fuel tank empty and his personal effects, including a wallet with a $50 note, on the seats.
Daniel was wearing business shoes and had not dressed for the 40-degree heat of summer.
"It is a complete mystery," Mr Rosewall added. "I was about to take it on myself and try and re-track it all."
Foul play has not been ruled out by police although no clear lines of criminal inquiry have been established.
Mr Rosewall was about to speak at a missing persons conference in Brisbane when he got the call from police about the Wilangee remains.
He says the area where they were found was subjected to a massive search just after Daniel went missing.
"They had 250 people on motorbikes and four-wheel-drives and aeroplanes and helicopters," Mr Rosewall added.
"I reckon I flew over where they're talking about in a helicopter with the police."
