For more than 20 years Bernadette and Henryk have owned and operated the Vein and Skin Clinic, with its flag ship clinic in Wellington. Pioneering the non-surgical laser treatment of varicose veins, Dr Henryk Poczwa has treated over 3000 veins in the past two decades.
Originally hailing from Invercargill, Bernadette returns to her roots once every six weeks, where she runs a cosmetic injectables clinic. From botulinum toxin anti-wrinkle treatments, to non-surgical face lifts through hyaluronic acid fillers, Bernadette is an expert in her field.
Dr Henryk Poczwa works from Southern Cross Hospital and MSK Ultrasound Southland, treating Southland citizens who suffer from varicose veins. The treatment is known as Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), and has taken over from the traditional ‘surgical stripping’ of the vein, due it its high success rate and low risk.
Varicose veins usually arise from the inability of blood to flow back towards the heart. The veins most commonly affected are those in the legs because standing and walking upright increases the pressure in the veins of the lower body. Painful symptoms may include aching, stinging, burning, throbbing, muscle cramps, and swelling. As the condition worsens the lower leg can become pigmented and scarred. And, if left untreated, the varicose veins can predispose to leg ulcers and deep vein clots.
It is a relatively pain free treatment – walk in, walk out – and you’re back at work by the next day usually.
Vein and Skin Clinic is Southern Cross affiliated and this procedure is usually fully covered.
