History comes alive on a Clutha River Heritage Cruise

Those on the Clutha River Heritage Cruise will see some of New Zealand’s best examples of 1860s European and Chinese gold-mining.

They will view the mining sites of Butchers Point and Doctors Point, and see the vast array of untouched and original schist huts that the gold-miners lived in all those years ago.

Tours are conducted on a supercomfortable pontoon craft with unimpeded views. Guests will be guided through the Doctors Point gold mine, highlighting points of interest and explaining how the mine operated. They will see the miners’ huts tucked away in the spectacular schist formations, and an array of gold-mining relics.

The 2 1/2-hour trip includes tea, coffee, soft drinks, and delicious home-made muffins, all served in the picnic area of the riverbank at Doctors Point Gold Mine.

Clutha River Cruises also operates the jet-boat bike-transfer service on the stunning and unique Roxburgh Gorge Cycle Trail between Doctors Point and Shingle Creek, and they will fascinate you with tales from the gold-rush past, and point out all the historic sites along the way.
