Their son Sam is based in Cromwell and now carries stock for viewing and test riding for your convenience.
Models offered through KiwE Bikes have a pedal assist option, which means cyclists can have the bike do some or all of the work for them, depending on their preference.
The bicycles are simply charged over a three to four hour period, which gives the rider an average distance of 50km-60km per charge, depending on how much they pedal.
Or you can turn your power off and use it as a normal bike with normal gears.
Andy, Diane and Sam have established the business to complement their other company, Ideal Caravans, as bikes are becoming a desirable item to take along on the journey.
"We thought what a great idea for people with motorhomes and caravans. When they go away it means they can park their vans up, take their bike off and away they go, whether just around town or on the wonderful rail trails that are on offer.''
Market research for KiwE Bikes involved visiting a large bike fair in Shanghai, China and more recently Germany where Andy and Diane were able to compare some of the top electric bikes produced.
"We were able to discuss New Zealand conditions and tailor-make our bikes with the correct gearing ratios, suspension for some of our more rugged roads and trails and specific controllers to `slow down or speed up' for hills.'' Diane said.
"No more getting off the bike at the bottom of the hill and walking it up, ladies are sometimes cautious of steep inclines, but now with the customed-to-New Zealand controllers I was able to simply climb the hills with ease.
"We managed to engage a company which exports to Europe, USA and Australia, and uses the best components available. They use top-grade aluminium for their frames, Shimano gears, Tektro disc brakes and the batteries used are either Li-ion Panasonic or Samsung.
"We have designed several models of bikes for New Zealand conditions that we think will suit a variety of people, from the classic ladies' bike for the coffee and wine trails, through to the more serious off-road rider.''
A number of KiwE Bike models are now available to view both in Timaru and Cromwell.
