Exploring and discovering nature in this magical space not only invigorates the spirit - it provides `fresh air' and a connection to nature - not the wifi!
High above Blueskin Bay sits an extraordinary visitor centre, complete with café and interactive educational facilities that is surrounded by over 300 hectares of predator-fenced, lush NZ forest - protectively nurturing some of the rarest species in New Zealand and indeed the world.
A comfortable 20 minute drive from Dunedin City you and your family can get up close and personal to one of the most ancient of species - the tuatara. Many of us have started to take an interest in what we can do to help our planet and our local plants and wildlife.
Come see how we do it, you may be inspired!
A popular addition this year to the sanctuary's growing range of activities is the `nature play' area. Created to encourage play in the outdoors and enhance children's experience of nature and conservation. A fenced 140m2 area, easily visible and accessible from the Visitor Centre, it is aligned with the Orokonui ecosystem. It has a small stream and native plantings, and features a bird's nest, a full sized moa sculpture, a child-sized predator tracking tunnel, a slide built into the landscape, wishing skinks, and a picnic table.
So take that drive and discover or rediscover the jewel that is Orokonui Ecosanctuary. Enjoy a coffee, and the stunning views from the cafe. If you are feeling energetic a hike down to New Zealand's tallest trees will get rid of any of that excess Christmas pudding.
