Duntroon is steeped in history

Thirty minutes inland from Oamaru is Duntroon, the biggest little town in the Waitaki Valley.

The Vanished World Fossil Centre is the heart of the Vanished World Trail, with displays that help explain and interpret the fossils, rocks, localities and land-forms along the trail. The centre will satisfy the curiosity of anyone who wants to learn more about North Otago’s limestone story and the marine ecosystems of the Oligocene epoch, some 20 to 30 million years ago. Children can spend time digging for a fossil, while adults can take in the geological history of the district’s early marine life.

The retail section at the Vanished World Centre has a superb range of children’s books focusing on the geology theme, along with GNS science maps and posters, and other books and information to satisfy anyone with a more serious interest in geology and the outdoors.
