Held biennially, the Otago Chamber of Commerce is proud to deliver the 12th Otago Business Awards, in what marks 22 years since the awards first began. Otago is home to many great businesses and the Awards are an opportunity to showcase the best in Otago business.
Otago is a great place to do business. The gold rush in the 1860’s gave the province a prosperous start, and the education focus that was so important to early settlers of Dunedin continues to underpin the regions ongoing success. Recent technology advances have worked in favour of the region, with businesses based in Otago being able to succeed on a global scale and businesses choosing the region as a base to provide their staff with a great lifestyle.
We have everything here – from a large primary agricultural sector to a world leading tech sector…and everything in between. Sometimes we forget to celebrate this, we have a tendency to not want to put our heads above the parapet in fear of the kiwi affliction – tall poppy syndrome. The Westpac Otago Business Awards is about turning the tall poppy syndrome on its head and celebrating the incredible number of innovative, passionate, creative and downright gusty people and businesses, whom call Otago home.
In 2020 we are acknowledging the “journeys” of our businesses from those starting out to those that have reached their destination. We know that the journey is not always straight forward, that there are road bumps along the way, changes in plans, and possibly a few storms to weather. 2020 has been a challenging year for business and we feel that at the end of a tough year it’s time to celebrate business successes and look towards a brighter future.
The business awards cover a wide range of categories, including those recognising sector excellence; international business success; innovation; sustainability & resilience; business integrity; and excellent health and safety practices. The awards are not just about long established businesses but also include emerging businesses and future business leaders. There are 18 awards in total and 3-4 finalists in all categories. Finalists represent businesses large and small from across the region.
Finalists are selected from a wide range of entries, following a careful selection process by a panel of independent judges. It’s a tough decision to make, with so many great businesses entering the awards, but the judges bring a wide range of expertise and work together to recognise business success.
For the first time, the Westpac Otago Business Awards will be offering up a “People’s Choice Award” in 2020, giving the public the chance to vote for their favourite business from amongst the finalists. Voting on this award will be open from 15-30 October and will be run through the Otago Daily Times.
The winners of the awards will be announced at a glamorous gala dinner at the Dunedin Town Hall on 13 November 2020. After such a rollercoaster year for business, it’s time to get out and celebrate business in the region with an evening of awards and entertainment, accompanied by delicious dinner with a local flavour.
