The Brighton Gala Day is on this Sunday and will once again be full of family fun, food and festivities.

It started as a small event and has turned into one of the biggest, most anticipated family and community events of the year.

The event is now in its 22nd year and promises to be a fun day.

The event is co-ordinated by the Weatherall family with special partners, Brighton Surf Lifesaving club and Green Island Lions.

Colin Weatherall has been organising the non-profit event since it started 22 years ago.

He says he does it because it is great to be able to put something back into the community.

Mr Weatherall said the event was unique, as it did not charge an entry fee. He expected to see about 10,000 people visit over the day.

He had his ‘‘fingers crossed for a sunny day where young and old can enjoy a fun day out’’.

This year, there will be about 150 stalls including a number of new ones, and a variety of food.

Some of the top entertainment attractions include helicopter flights and Otago Museum’s spectacular display, a ferris wheel, Blake and Gavin Fox on Motor MX , Brighton Fire and Emergency live displays and a custom car club display of more than 25 luxury cars.

Mr Weatherall encouraged anyone to come along as they could go home feeling as if they had had ‘‘a good day out’’.

In addition to plenty of goodies, there will be a wide selection of food available, including the traditional barbecue and just about everything else a food lover could desire.

‘‘The general idea is to give people a chance to have a great day out without having to spend a whole lot of money,’’ Mr Weatherall said.
