Companion Dogs for Children

We are proud to announce the launch our exciting new programme, Companion Dogs for Children, where specially trained dogs are gifted to families with Deaf or Hearing Impaired children who are in need of a loyal and loving best friend.

Deafness is a family disability, and our aim is to enhance individual independence and life satisfaction of each child and their family through the loyal companionship of their very own doggy friend.

Costs for Companion Dogs for Kids Programme:

 Purchase Cost:$1,300
 Vet Costs:$350
 Equipment$1,000
General Costs inc. food (per month)$50
 Training costs$4,250
ESTIMATED COST PER CHILD COMPANION DOG$7,000

These special dogs help encourage the child to improve his or her social interactions and relationships through their connection with their Companion Dog, increase their levels of physical activity or play, reduce levels of stress for the child and their family and decrease the family’s concern for the child’s wellbeing knowing their trusty pal is by their side.

Clare McLaughlin, General Manager Hearing Dogs NZ says  ”with a disability like hearing it can go unnoticed at times because it’s not as physically obvious as other disabilities. Being deaf can be quite lonely, but for children to have a companion and a friend – it’s amazing.”

Tom Wilkinson from New Plymouth was the very first recipient of the Companion Dogs for Children programme.  Tom’s mother Jo Wilkinson said, “At night time it’s made a huge impact, because when Tom sleeps he has his cochlear hearing aids out.

Now he has Albert his dog with him, if there’s an emergency, Albert can go get help. As a parent, it gives you peace of mind…Tom’s got a companion to look out for him”.

Now Tom has Albert in his life he no longer suffers from debilitating nightmares at night time. Albert guards Tom at night and makes sure no pesky monsters under the bed come out for Tom.

Our very special dogs positively impact on the life of the individual they are gifted to.
By encouraging kids to step out with confidence (with their loyal friend at their side) they can be the best version of themselves.

The programme’s target population is children who have Hearing Impairment and are between the ages of 4 and 10.   Families accepted into the programme are not charged a fee and are not asked to purchase their Companion Dog. The majority of funding is received from trust grants, individual donations and other fundraising ventures.
