Brahms: A German Requiem
Rimsky-Korsakov introduced Scheherazade as follows: “The Sultan had sworn to put to death each of his wives. But the Sultana Scheherazade saved her life by telling him tales for one thousand and one nights … until he at last gave up entirely on his bloody plan.”
The Requiem is one of Brahms’s most popular works. Although Brahms was a believer, he was not overtly religious, and later said that he would have preferred the word “Human” rather than “German” in this work’s title. Rebecca Ryan studied in New Zealand and the UK and has sung with leading orchestras and opera companies in both countries. Jarvis Dams was a 2016 Lexus SongQuest semi-finalist and was also selected for the Dame Kiri te Kanawa Foundation programme.
