Making a splash . . . Thousands of rubber ducks will be poured into the Water of Leith for the Great Dunedin Duck Race on Sunday.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Dunedin East charitable trust and The Hits, the event will be held on the Water of Leith from the Anzac Ave bridge on Sunday from 11am.

This year, proceeds from the event will be split between the Otago Hospice, local surf life-saving clubs, Scouts and St John. Businesses were offered the opportunity to be involved and decorate a duck to generate extra funds for charity. Those proceeds will be given to the hospice.

The event will be divided into separate races. The small ducks race of 5000 ducks determines the winners of the duck raffle prizes. Tickets for this race have been for sale for the past month and will be available on the day, at $2 each.

The corporate duck race is sponsored by various local businesses, who have the challenge of decorating a plastic duck in an imaginative way, which can promote their business or brand, while considering the impact this will have on the duck’s ability to float and its speed down the Leith.

As well as the races, there will be a duck craft decorating station, carnival games, toss the duck competition and plenty of spot prizes.

The first place prize in the raffle is an Air New Zealand Great Mystery Break for two, second place is $500 towards a weekend for two at Mercure Queenstown Resort and third place is dinner for two at Cobb and Co Dunedin. Ducks 4-9 also win $100 grocery vouchers from New World Centre City.

The proceeds from the raffles will be split, between St John, Scouts and surf life-saving clubs. All proceeds sold by each group will be returned to them. Rotary is covering all costs.

The event is a fun afternoon out for everyone involved, including those who buy raffles in the small duck race, those in the Business Duck race and representatives from the nominated charities Parking in the Dunedin City Council car park at the front of Forsyth Barr Stadium will be free on the day.

Make sure you don’t miss out on the entertainment this Sunday.
