Thousands expected for big day

Stalls, entertainment and food trucks will line Main South Rd, Green Island, next month for the local community’s annual Christmas market day.

The Green Island Market Day will be held on Saturday, December 7 from 10am until 1pm.

Market organiser Narelle Stewart said changes at last year’s event, including having designated areas for different stalls, entertainment and food, had worked well and would be implemented again this year.

“Most of the things went really well and we got some good feedback.”

Creating the zones allowed organisers to group each section, and make lots of space for people to sit, relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Outdoor furniture would be positioned along the street.

There will be more than 100 stalls for people to shop for favourites such as clothes, jewellery, second-hand products, and arts and crafts. There would also be some new, exciting vendors.

Having a stall in the market day was a great way for businesses new to the area to share what they did, Narelle said.

“It’s very much a mix of the traditional products and new ideas.

“There definitely seems to be a good variety of things.”

Organisers tried to allow the market day to expand each year and support each of the activities along the street.

“We want to open upmore areas for people to hang out.”

Funds raised from last year’s raffle went towards the set-up costs and future community projects.

“We are rapt with the fact that we made money to support six different clubs and schools in the area.”

This year, funds from the event will again go to community groups, schools and kindergartens which apply for grants inthe new year.

The raffle, supported by Greater Green Island businesses which have donated prizes, will be drawn on the day.

Last year’s event attracted thousands of people and the same numbers are expected this year.

“We’re very fortunate that it’s been going for such a long time.”

The market day is a well-known community event that keeps people going back each year.

“It’s always such a lovely vibe.”
