In this week's instalment of our est. 1868 blog series, Curator, Humanities Moira White explains why these rugged boots, now over a century old, are included in our deadliest category.

There is a pair of patched, worn leather boots, a little over a century old, on display in the deadliest section of est. 1868.

An eyelet is missing from the right boot; a sole is nailed in place; there are cracks in the leather and a lace is lost.  Many repairs are evident. The initials “E W” are pierced on their tongues.

The accession register notes only “Boots (Capt. Scott) per S.S Aurora. Per Imperial Transantarctic Exped (Shackleton)”...

BERLIN WOOL WORK: THE BLOOD OF MURDERED TIME
Expert Talk

Although it enjoyed rampant popularity in the mid-1800s, Berlin wool work had many critics who regarded it as lacking originality, overly garish and generally unattractive; some still consider this type of needlework to be what one 19th century critic called “the blood of murdered time”.

In her talk, fashion and textile historian Angela Lassig will explore the history of Berlin wool work and look at its popularity in 19th century New Zealand.
