JAMES CAMERON – CHALLENGING THE DEEP OPENING DAY

We would like to extend our gratitude to all who were able to join the opening weekend celebrations for the new exhibition James Cameron – Challenging the Deep.

We have been blown away by the response from the exhibition so far, and are looking forward to hearing what future visitors think about it!

The James Cameron – Challenging the Deep opening weekend included a wide array of activities and talks for all ages including Challenging the Deep – Family Day, 'Quick Talks' with NIWA, documentaries about James Cameron's explorations, films, and more!

Challenging the Deep – Family Day included a visit from the University of Otago's Department of Marine Science Aquavan which was a hit, allowing children to get a hands-on experience with marine life from around Coastal Otago. Lab in a Box was also present and included three stations of experiments ranging from pH level testing of our seas, to experiments about flames and gasses.

JAMES CAMERON – CHALLENGING THE DEEP

Developed by the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney, in collaboration with the Avatar Alliance Foundation, James Cameron – Challenging the Deep takes visitors to the depths of our oceans through the lenses of Cameron’s underwater cameras, and his other incredible technological innovations that have made it possible to explore some of the most mysterious parts of our planet.

THE CAMERON COLLECTION: AVATAR

Join us in the Perpetual Guardian Planetarium for part one of six of The Cameron Collection, the epic science fiction film Avatar.

Set in the mid-22nd century, human beings are colonising a habitable moon within a nearby solar system, in order to mine unobtanium. The mining threatens the indigenous humanoid species, the Na’vi, and we follow a genetically engineered Na’vi body that is operated remotely by a human, as it interacts with the local Na’vi tribe.

One of Cameron’s best-known films, Avatar quickly became the highest-grossing film of all time. Enjoy the Academy Award-winning cinematography on the dome screen.

The Cameron Collection screens on the first Thursday of each month during the exhibition (except January).
