Having dressed British royalty, Oscar nominees and New Zealand's political elite, fashion designer Liz Mitchell will show in Dunedin for the first time during iD Dunedin Fashion Week next month.

Established in 1994, her label includes couture, bridal wear and a "ready-to-wear" range in Farmers.

Her garments have also been worn on the international stage by British royal Zara Phillips, Oscar nominee Keisha Castle-Hughes, former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark and actress Lucy Lawless.

The iD runway will feature Mitchell's winter 2011 collection, The Scent of Peony, inspired by wartime Shanghai in the 1940s.

She also plans to show archive pieces including items from her Nightflowers of the Pacific, 2006 autumn-winter collection.

She will show alongside Australian designer Akira Isogawa and Charlotte Smith, curator of the Darnell Collection, at the iD shows on April 8 and 9.

Mitchell described iD as a "wonderful opportunity for graduates and designers to present their ranges and demonstrate their fashion talent".

"Having watched iD Dunedin Fashion Week from afar all these years, I am thrilled to show my couture collection in the railway station show," she said.

iD committee chairwoman Susie Staley said Mitchell's presence would add a "different dimension" to this year's event.

"This year's show will offer the audience a chance to see for the first time in Dunedin glamorous pieces from one of New Zealand's leading couture designers," she said.

Media personality Carol Hirschfeld returns to host the emerging designer awards on April 7, and the fashion show on April 8, before being joined by John Campbell for the April 9 show.

Fashion week runs from April 5 to 10.
