What was the best birthday present you ever received, and why?

On my 32nd birthday, my parents helped to pay for my first house. Without it I could never have got into home ownership.

What smell do you find irresistible?

Fresh baked bread. As a child growing up in Turkey, I would walk every morning to the baker's. The smell reminds me of a great childhood.

What is your least favourite thing about humanity?

The constant drive for better and newer stuff and discarding as rubbish perfectly good andusable goods just so we can be fashionable.

What is one strong childhood memory?

My first time in a sailing dinghy. The feeling of speed and being on the edge of control was unforgettable.

You are a new addition to the crayon box. What colour are you, and why?

Blue. It reminds me of water and sky. I am never happier than being by or on the water.
