A self-taught artist, Ryan Moore creates his works by layering only white spray paint through hand-drawn and cut stencils.

An exhibition of Moore's work, Grip tape and a can of paint, is on at Forrester Gallery, Oamaru, until the end of July.

What was the best birthday present you ever received, and why?

As a kid I would always get some sort of bucket and net as part of my present every year. My family would camp for a month or so over summer and I'd spend every waking moment wading in pristine rivers, hunting and exploring all day long.

These are probably my fondest memories of being a child . . . Back when you didn't have to check if it was safe to put your head under and sun block never existed.

What is your message?
That you only live once and your time here is worth more than any money. Be present.

If you were going to an island and could only take three things, what would they be and why?

My wife, kids and cold beer - the three things I love most.

What's something only your family knows about you?

My love of Antiques Roadshow and that Nigel Latta was my childhood babysitter.

You are a new addition to the crayon box. What colour are you, and why?

I'd be an eraser crayon so I could draw freely without hesitation or regret.
