WHAT KINDS OF TRIPS DO YOU MAKE?

With three young children in Waitati, I ride my cargo-frame e-bike for fun to enjoy a splash at the beach or a hike up Mopanui. I also love to ride by myself to town for live music, art, the farmers market, or dinner with a starlight ride home.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT IT?

Riding my bike brings back all of the childhood joy with freedom, fitness and feel-good energy. I get the rush of exercise, without being too tired to get through my day. (See the three young children for more information.)

WHAT WOULD MAKE IT EASIER TO GET AROUND?

We need separated and expanded cycleways throughout Dunedin. Families need safety to be the first priority to encourage more cycling. We need a cycleway between Waitati and Warrington, as well as an electric shuttle service every 30-60 minutes between Blueskin Bay and Dunedin. With bike racks and frequent, affordable, public transportation, we would bike in town and Blueskin Bay. I would love to ditch the single-user, internal combustion engine!

HOW DO WE GET THERE?

Our community should expand the cycle network and create separate spaces for cars and for cyclists. Our central government should subsidise low-income families to invest in e-bikes as alternatives to cars and petrol for our health and our pocketbooks.
