Travel writing awards

Clinton travel writer Julie Orr-Wilson has won the Cathay Pacific Travel Writer of the Year Award for a piece published in the Otago Daily Times.

Ms Orr-Wilson won the Ngai Tahu Award for the best travel story over 1000 words for ``Getting by without Language'' at the Travel Media Awards in Auckland on Friday to go into contention for the top award.

Judge Alastair Carthew said the story stood out for its humour, ``some of it self-deprecating''; generous and creative use of quotes, its objectivity toward the subject, its feeling of being there and its human element.

``It was not just a travelogue, more an evocative journey by the writer who displays an enticing ability to take the reader with them in pursuit of an end objective.''

She wins double tickets to Madrid.

Otago Daily Times contributor Gillian Vine was runner-up in the Treadright Foundation Award for the best responsible tourism story for ``Bringing Books to the Yasawas''.
