Bali: tests on white powder 'negative'

Tests results on the white powder found on Perth teenager Jamie Murphy in Kuta have come back negative, his lawyer says.

The 18-year-old has been in custody since Tuesday when he was picked up after allegedly being found at a Kuta nightclub with a small plastic bag containing white powder, which police suspected was cocaine or heroin.

"It's negative," Murphy's lawyer Dessy Widiantari told reporters after visiting him at Kuta Police Station on Wednesday.

When asked whether the negative test result was for the substance or the blood and urine tests conducted on the teen, she replied: "All three of them negative . . . hopefully"

The Denpasar Police Forensic Laboratory completed the tests on Wednesday and handed the results to the drug squad.

Murphy faced a maximum of 12 years in jail if the powder was found to be a prohibited drug.

Kuta Police Chief Commissioner Wayan Sumara on Tuesday told reporters Murphy "said he got it from one of the people on the street."

Australian consulate officials were planning to visit him on Wednesday and the government had been in contact with his family to provide advice on issues like legal representation.

Earlier on Wednesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop warned young Australians travelling to Indonesia that "the laws can be very harsh for offences or activities in Australian that might seem minor".

Video footage of the teen's arrest broadcast by the Nine Network showed him being roughly grabbed around the face and neck by a man believed to be a police officer.

"I have witnessed this kind of behaviour before from the Indonesian police," Ms Bishop told Nine.

"But, again, I say we're subject to their laws, to their system and the way they do things."

Gerry Maio, president of the Bayswater City Soccer Club in Perth where Mr Murphy plays, said his mother was overwhelmed by what had happened.

"Of course she was in tears as any mother would be," he told ABC radio.

"It's very hard to gather everything together."

He described Mr Murphy as a wonderful young man and athlete and said the allegations were uncharacteristic of him.

"He was a very promising athlete in our sport. I haven't even seen him with a bottle of beer in his hand," Mr Maio said.
