Boys find baby's body on Sydney beach

Police hold grave concerns for the mother of a baby found buried in the sand at Sydney's Maroubra beach today.

The infant's naked body was found by two young boys in a shallow grave at the southern end of the beach, about 20 metres from the water, about 10am.

Police are unable to tell the child's sex or age because of the advanced state of decomposition.

"Police are concerned about the welfare of the mother involved and hope she sought medical assistance," Inspector Andrew Holland told reporters.

"We're making some inquiries through births, deaths and marriages to determine where we can find the parents of this child."

Insp Holland said sand was being removed from around the body for forensic examination.

The two boys who found the baby are aged six and seven.

They are receiving counselling after making the grim discovery while digging at the southern end of the beach.

They immediately ran to get their father.

Police have sealed off the southern end.
