Cops 'pinned down, beat pensioner'

A group of police officers will know within days if they will be stood down, following the release of damning footage showing a Melbourne disability pensioner pinned down, beaten and doused with capsicum spray.

A specialist police unit will decide whether they are suspended or reassigned while Victoria's anti-corruption commission investigates, Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said.

"We are actively seeking further detail and making an assessment as to whether they should be stood down ... or placed in alternative duties," he told reporters on Wednesday.

"This couldn't be undertaken until we got the authority from IBAC," he said, referring to the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission.

Mr Patton expects a decision to be made on Wednesday or Thursday.

It follows the release of CCTV footage of the officers pinning down and beating a Melbourne disability pensioner in September before spraying him with capsicum spray at his Preston home.

More CCTV video emerged on Tuesday night of a police officer throwing nine punches to the head, neck and back of a Sudanese-born Melbourne man at a Preston chemist, The Age reported.

The vision also shows an officer kneeling on the 23-year-old before he is kicked in the head and hit with a baton then stomped on his back, with the vision showing four officers in total.

The man, who was having a psychotic episode, had reportedly been trying to rob the chemist when a civilian restrained him at the back of the store before police took over in February 2016.

Legal groups will stand on the steps of the Victorian parliament on Wednesday to call on the state government to overhaul Victoria Police's complaints system.
