Girl shot in head after supermarket fracas

An 11-year-old girl is recovering in hospital after being shot in the face following a fight at a Woolworths supermarket in Tasmania.

Phoenix Newitt was shot on Tuesday night while sitting in a car with family members outside a house in Deloraine, near Launceston.

Police say her mother was involved in a scuffle with the girlfriend of the alleged shooter at a nearby Woolworths earlier in the evening

It sparked a second argument at Stagg Court, where a 25-year-old man fired a rifle at the car containing Phoenix, her mother, uncle and four-year-old cousin.

She was flown to The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne and had emergency surgery to remove bullet fragments from her head and neck.

Her condition has since improved from critical to stable.

The alleged shooter is being held in custody after fronting Launceston Magistrates Court on charges of causing grievous bodily harm and recklessly discharging a firearm.

He is expected to re-appear in the same court on Friday.
