Parts of southeast Queensland will be hotter than Weipa, at the tip of the state, as a heatwave likely to break records sweeps the region.
Communities west of Brisbane, including Ipswich, Gatton and Laidley, are expecting the mercury to climb to 38 degrees on Monday, two degrees hotter than what residents at Weipa, at the tip of Cape York, will see.
Brisbane will be cool by comparison, but still sweaty with a top temperature of 33 expected.
Gatton, in the Lockyer Valley, had its hottest September day on record on Sunday, with a top temperature of 39 degrees.
The Bureau of Meteorology says more records could fall in inlands parts of the southeast on Wednesday, and Brisbane will also nudge its September heat record on Thursday, with the city tipped to reach 37.
"Our record is 38 so we are approaching record temperatures even around Brisbane," bureau forecaster Diana Eadie has told ABC radio.
