Four people have been charged over a "horrendous and shocking attack" on police officers in Melbourne.
Three men, aged 26 to 38, and a 25-year-old Langwarrin woman will face the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday over the assault at St Kilda on Sunday.
They have all been charged with two counts of assault police, affray, violent disorder, intentionally cause injury and other assault-related offences.
Police were called to Fitzroy Street about 3am on Sunday after a woman was assaulted.
The officers were then attacked, one allegedly "ragdolled'' - having their head repeatedly smashed into concrete.
They had been trying to arrest a man and used pepper spray, when others intervened.
Both officers were taken to hospital but have since been released.
The officer who was "ragdolled" suffered head injuries, a sore neck and trauma to a biceps and a surgeon will advise on Monday if surgery is required, Superintendent Tony Silva told 3AW.
The other officer has "quite severe swelling to his face, cuts and abrasions", he added.
"I have been in this job for over 30 years. I have seen absolutely the best of the community and I see absolutely the worst of the community and that was right up there with the worst," Supt Silva said.
Victoria's Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt labelled it a "horrendous and shocking attack".
"When you see people in the community commit such vicious acts, it is only sheer good fortunate that people punched or assaulted in that manner are not killed," he told 3AW radio.
"That is a concern in some cases, that the penalties attached can be lower than perhaps we ought think they should be."
