International visitors to the Gold Coast increased by 14% in 2016, according to the International Visitor Survey.

Federal Tourism Minister and Gold Coast MP Steven Ciobo released the latest figures from Tourism Research Australia on Wednesday.

Ciobo said the results showed the Gold Coast's popularity with the international market had outperformed that of Queensland and Australia, whose numbers grew by 10% and 11% respectively.

"Encouragingly, the number of Chinese tourists grew by 21% last year, cementing the Gold Coast's reputation as a favoured destination for Chinese travellers," he said in a statement.

Ciobo said the data showed international visitors stayed a total of 9.7 million nights on the Gold Coast in 2016.

They also injected $1.2 billion into the local economy.
