Man critical after Sydney gang attack

A 22-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after a group of men armed with bats and metal bars attacked him and four other people in Sydney's southwest.

Police say that just after 12am three men and two women were walking along Boolarong Avenue in Chipping Norton when the armed group approached and proceeded to assault three men and two women.

The most seriously injured were the 22-year-old man who was hit on the head with an iron bar and an 18-year-old woman who was punched and kicked before the armed group fled the scene.

The 22-year-old was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition, suffering a fractured skull and bleeding to the brain.

The 18-year-old woman was also taken to Liverpool Hospital in a stable condition.

The remaining injured people were treated at the scene by paramedics.

Police are appealing for anyone with information on the incident to come forward.
