Missing meerkitten back at zoo

A one-month-old meerkitten is back in expert care after it vanished from Perth Zoo following its first steps outside the nest box.

Staff discovered the animal was missing during evening zoo rounds on Wednesday and were investigating whether the newborn was possibly stolen or taken by a predatory bird.

WA Police on Saturday said they found the meerkitten during a search of a Beverley home on Friday night, and a man and woman had been questioned by police.

The meerkitten had dedicated staff monitoring it throughout the day of its disappearance and was last seen 30 minutes before evening checks.

The mother, Bamba, was brought to Perth from Werribee Open Range Zoo in Victoria, and it is suspected Perth Zoo-born male Runako may have been the father.
