'Mountain of a man' felled by one punch

A football fan threw a single punch at another spectator, described as a "mountain of a man", who fell and fatally hit his head on a concrete floor, a Melbourne court has heard.

Darren Bell died at Heywood in regional Victoria on May 9 last year, and Steven Saunders, of Portland, was charged with manslaughter after turning himself in to police.

Both men had been drinking for several hours before the confrontation, the Melbourne Magistrates' Court has previously heard.

Witness Todd Chambers said in his statement tendered to the court he saw Mr Bell, who he knew as "Bushy", and Saunders "having words with each other" at Heywood Recreation Reserve.

Mr Chambers described Mr Bell as a "mountain of a man", who he estimated was about six feet, 10 inches (2.08m) tall.

Mr Chambers said when he saw the argument he knew neither of the men were going to back down.

"They were arguing then they moved their bodies to shape up to each other," Mr Chambers said in his statement tendered as part of Thursday's committal hearing.

"Then Steven just rocked back and threw a punch which hit Bushy right in the jaw."

"There was only one punch," Mr Chambers said.

"The punch caused Bushy to fall backwards and he hit his head on the concrete, which made a sickening noise.

"He was such a big guy, falling from that height, I knew it was going to be no good."

It was common knowledge the men didn't like each other and had fought previously, he said.

Mr Bell's brother Michael Bell, who is the president of the Heywood Football Netball Club, said he had always worried Mr Bell could be involved in something like this.

"Gives as good as he gets sometimes," Mr Bell said in a statement tendered in court.

"He has a good record of being in fights."

Another witness, Jason Holtze, said he saw Mr Bell punch at Saunders but miss, and then Saunders punched back.

Saunders is currently on bail.

The committal hearing is expected to finish on Friday.
