A notorious child killer has been arrested for allegedly breaching parole conditions.
Allan Austin Hughes, now 38, was sentenced to a minimum of 14 years jail in 1994 over the fatal bashing of his girlfriend's six-year-old son, John Ashfield, on the NSW south coast the previous year.
The then 20-year-old and the boy's mother, Gunn-Britt Ashfield, attacked John in front of his siblings over the course of several hours at their home in Nowra.
At one point they placed a telephone book on his head, then repeatedly hit him with a hammer.
John died the next day in hospital.
Hughes was released on parole from Silverwater prison in 2009.
He was arrested on Friday for allegedly breaching his parole conditions.
Hughes was freed under strict bail conditions, including that he not contact John's family or visit the Illawarra.
Hughes, who is living under a new name, recently moved in with a woman and her two children in Kempsey on the north coast.
The woman's sister reportedly became suspicious after he was reluctant to have his photograph taken and when she searched the internet she discovered his criminal past.
He was taken to Kempsey police station, following a report to local police.
He has been refused bail to appear in Port Macquarie Local Court later on Saturday.
