Praise for backpacker after rape ordeal

Police will try to piece together the details of a horrifying ordeal in which a British tourist was kidnapped, raped and bashed over two months in outback Queensland.

It's believed the 22-year-old backpacker was initially kidnapped allegedly by a man she met at a "bush doof" dance in Cairns in late January.

Police eventually caught up with the pair on Sunday afternoon on the Warrego Highway in southeast Queensland, after an interaction with a local service station worker led to the worker getting suspicious and calling police.

The 22-year-old Cairns man has been remanded in custody on several charges including four counts of rape and strangulation, deprivation of liberty and eight counts of assault occasioning bodily harm.

Police are now piecing together a more complete picture of the 1300km ordeal, including the route they took and when the assaults occurred.

The woman, who is believed to have been in Australia on a tourist visa since 2015, is understood to have made contact with family back in England, and is receiving treatment and support from local authorities.

Detective Inspector Paul Hart said the woman had shown remarkable courage throughout her nightmare ordeal.

"The opinion of the investigators and myself is we have potentially saved this young girl's life," he said.
