Police were confronted with a "horrific" scene when they arrived at a southeast Queensland home where a woman and girl had been stabbed to death, investigators say.
Detective Inspector Paul McCusker says police and paramedics were called to the house, in the Toowoomba suburb of Newtown, at 9.20am (local time).
"Quite obviously it's a quite distressing state for police to arrive ... and to find this horrific scene," he told reporters in Toowoomba this afternoon.
Det Insp McCusker said a male who resided at the Redwood Street home was assisting police.
Officers have not confirmed media reports that the man called police himself to say he had stabbed his mother and 12-year-old sister.
The street has been roped off and detectives are scouring the scene.
Local Wendy Ellis said the neighbourhood was shocked by the deaths.
"They were nice, very quiet. You know the most they'd say is, 'Hello, how are you?'" she told ABC Radio.
"Lovely little kid, quiet, pleasant little girl, it's just dreadful.
"It's just unbelievable."
