Sydney lion dancer fighting for life

A teenage lion dancer is in hospital with a collapsed lung after landing throat-first on a platform during rehearsals.

The 19-year-old was practising a traditional Chinese dance at a weekly class at Sydney's Chinese Youth League on Tuesday night when a stunt went horribly wrong.

He was standing on another performer's shoulders and preparing to jump to a platform when he fell short.

He landed on the front side of his neck and lost consciousness.

He is in St Vincent's Hospital in a critical condition.

It's understood the teen had been part of the 20-person dance troupe for about two years.

The Chinese Youth League has been a cultural institution in Sydney for 75 years and is behind the traditional lion dancing performances for Chinese New Year celebrations in the city centre.

Chinese Youth League president Patricia Quah described it as a tragic accident.
