Tasmania stand-off enters second day

A stand-off with an armed man, who is alone in a Tasmanian home, has stretched into a second day.

Cedar Street in Newnham, in Launceston, remains blocked off and specialist police are negotiating with the 35-year-old man who is holed up in a house.

The man, who is thought to have access to guns, initially held a woman and two children early on Monday. They were later released unharmed.

Police remained in contact with the man through the night and negotiations will resume on Tuesday.

"In situations like this, negotiation is the primary resolution strategy and seeking a peaceful resolution without injury to anyone," Tasmania Police commander Brett Smith said.

Residents in nearby homes have been evacuated.
