Toddler on motorbike and kids in the boot

A toddler on a motorbike and three kids in a car boot.

Those were the worrying sights Canberra police were confronted with over the weekend.

First they caught a 59-year-old Canberra man riding an unregistered motorcycle, without a licence or proper helmet, with his 18-month-old granddaughter sitting unrestrained on his lap.

Just hours later police found three children, all aged under seven, riding in the rear of a station wagon being driven by a 33-year-old woman.

All four children were unharmed but ACT Policing said the two incidents could have had devastating consequences.

"There is no safe way to restrain an 18-month-old child on a motorcycle and there is no safe way for a child to ride in the boot of a car," Sergeant Rod Anderson said today.
