Vic cops hunt cars for Ristevski murder

Detectives hunting the killer of Melbourne woman Karen Ristevski want to speak to owners of distinctive black Mercedes-Benz coupes as new evidence emerges which could help solve the case.

They also want to speak to the driver of a white dual cab ute which was towing a trailer carrying an excavator at Diggers Rest, northwest of Melbourne on June 29 last year.

Police on Friday released CCTV footage of what they believe to be Ms Ristevski's Mercedes, and other cars travelling along a road towards Mt Macedon on the day she is believed to have died.

Inspector Tim Day wants to eliminate any possibility that the car spotted in the footage belonged to anyone else.

"We've still got a little bit of work to do to eliminate any other cars, certainly in the state of Victoria," Insp Day told reporters.

Of the hundreds of black Mercedes-Benz SLK coupe owners spoken to by police, fewer than 20 are yet to be contacted in Victoria.

The car was spotted heading northwest over train tracks in Diggers Rest about 11.12am on June 29, 2016.

Ms Ristevski (47) was reported missing the next day, after having been last seen at her Avondale Heights home by her husband, Borce Ristevski.

Mr Ristevski reportedly told police his wife had gone for a walk to clear her head after an argument about 10am.

Her body was found in bushland at Mt Macedon on February 20 this year.

Police believe the Mercedes-Benz was driven through Diggers Rest on to Gisborne and then past the Mount Macedon Golf Club towards Macedon Regional Park, where the mother's body was found.

Mr Ristevski has told police he took his wife's car out for a drive on June 29 but did a u-turn and returned home.

"I'm aware that's what his version of events are," Insp Day said.

"He remains a suspect in relation to the death of Karen."

Mr Ristevski's mother told News Corp in February her son was a "good family man" who was nice to his wife and they shared a good family life together.
