Wading man killed by croc

A man has been killed by a 3.3 metre crocodile at a notorious river crossing in the Northern Territory.

The 47-year-old local's body was recovered on Thursday night at Cahills Crossing - a feeding ground for crocodiles near Kakadu National Park.

Police say the crocodile was found nearby and was "destroyed at the scene."

The man had waded into the fast-flowing East Alligator River in West Arnhem Land with two women around 4pm.

The women made it across without incident but reported that their companion was missing.

Local police and rangers found his body about two kilometres downstream at around 7pm "in close proximately to a 3.3m crocodile", Superintendent Warren Jackson said.

"The man's body has been transported to Darwin in order to determine the cause of death," he said.

The victim and the two women were locals.
