Detectives in New South Wales are working to catch the people who left a young father on the side of a road with fatal burns.
Wade Still, a 23-year-old from Lake Macquarie, was discovered by a taxi driver badly burned, lying in roadside grass at Whitebridge near Newcastle at 1am on Monday (local time).
"You felt so helpless," the driver told the Seven Network.
"There's not much you can do for the poor fella."
The driver called emergency services and Still was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital but died during the flight.
He had previously been in prison for assaulting paramedics who worked to help his pregnant partner in 2017.
Police launched a strike force to investigate the death and the homicide squad are involved in the case.
"His poor kids are going to be broken," his partner told media in Newcastle on Monday.
"I want (the culprit) to come forward and pay for what you've done."
