Pupils from schools throughout New Zealand (right) are taking part in the University of Otago’s "hands-on" programme.

Attending Hands-On at Otago at the University Union Hall yesterday are (bottom photo, from left) Vincent Djana (17),  Lilia Babu (17) and Georgia Rawson (16), all of Auckland, Tara Marshall (16), of Fairlie, and Sarah Tong (17), of  Auckland.

The university’s expanded summer Hands-On programme this year, which included science, humanities and business to raise awareness of the university and Dunedin,  attracted 415 pupils from 170 schools around the country.

History has shown about 40% of students attending the week-long residential Hands-On programme, which had been going for 28 years and was formerly known as Hands on Science, later return to the city as students.

Aside from a morning project on one of 35 topics, students  took part in shorter afternoon sessions on other topics, a social programme and outdoor activities.
