Grease was the word at the Otago Southland Theatre Awards.

Award convener Helen Horsnell, of Dunedin, said more than 200 people attended the "black tie and red carpet" award night at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum on Saturday.

There were more than 80 nominees in the 19 award categories.

The Taieri Musical Society production Grease: The Arena Spectacular Live won several awards including best overall production.

Society president Tania Graham said winning the awards was "an extremely proud moment".

"We presented Grease in a way that has never before been done in Dunedin, let alone New Zealand at a regional level, and succeeded in every way possible. It was a mammoth undertaking and we are ecstatic at the win."

The awards were judged by Peter Chin and Irene Mosley, of Dunedin, Greg Thompson, of Queenstown, Alison Morgan, of Balclutha, Barry Gibbons, of Alexandra and Rodd Pearson, of Balclutha.

"It is lovely for everyone to come and celebrate as a society together," Mrs Horsnell said.
