Waves crash against the sand sausages at St Clair Beach, Dunedin, yesterday afternoon as strong winds whipped up the sea.

MetService forecaster Matthew Ford said winds of up to 65kmh were recorded at Dunedin Airport and the sea was very rough, swells rising up to 4m.

The South Island experienced much better weather than the North Island over the King’s Birthday long weekend, Mr Ford said.

Although it was a little frosty in Central Otago, Alexandra starting at -3°C yesterday morning, the southern regions enjoyed pockets of sun, and Oamaru was treated to a high of 21°C during the Steampunk NZ Festival on Saturday.

"Quite a nice ridge of high pressure" was expected to spread over the country today and it would stick around until next week, Mr Ford said.

This meant the weather would be a lot more settled and Dunedin would have a mixture of fine spells and cloudy weather.
